Abortion

Over the last dozen years, as the pro-life v. pro-choice battle has waged, there has been little change in public attitudes about abortion.

In 2001, 42% said that abortion was morally acceptable. The number is the same in 2013. 45% said abortion was morally wrong. In 2013, 49% hold that view.

In 2001,48% considered themselves to be pro-choice. In 2013 the number is 45%.

In 2001, 42% considered themselves to be pro-life. In 2013 the number is 48%.

In 2003, 23% thought abortion should be legal under any circumstance. Today that number is 26%.

In 2003, 19% thought it should be illegal under all circumstances. Today that number is 20%.

Americans’ perception is that 51% of us are pro-choice, while 35% are pro-life.

In 2006, 44% thought the Democratic Party better represented their views on abortion. Today that number is 41%.

In 2006, 33% thought the Republican Party better represented their views on abortion. Today that number is 36%.

In 2006, 28% saw abortion as a critical issue. Today that number is 18%.

In 2006, when asked (without prompting) what is the most important problem facing this country today, 1% listed abortion. Today that number is less than 0.5%. [Gallup]

In 1992, 34% wanted the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v Wade. Today 29% have that view.
